Attention Higher Education: Digital Signage is a Great Way to Communicate and Provide Value to Your Students and Staff

July 7, 2011 Posted by Liz Kelly

Digital signage has the ability to seamlessly integrate into almost any architectural environment,  however many questions abound about how to implement digital signage. These questions often serve as a mental barrier and they inhibit the ability to define an implementation strategy, resulting in a difficult decision making process for the client or facility manager. Is digital signage really effective? Will the technology be out-of-date by the time the signs are installed?  How do we manage? How can facility managers and clients compare information from various digital signage suppliers to understand the cost, value and key differentiators and not feel like they are being taken for a ride or being ripped off?

Most clients we service like the idea of integrating digital signage into new or existing architectural signage solutions, but are not sure how to approach this issue. With budgets being scrutinized and reduced, the last thing most organizations want to do is commit dollars and more resources to signage. Fortunately as the tech industry continues to boom and digital signage related technology grows and drops in price, there are more opportunities to integrate digital signage into the environment.

One market that continues to make headlines in digital signage news is higher education. This is a market that is clearly an active adopter on integrating digital signage and can prove the benefits and ROI. In an article recently published by Fast Co Design, “The Future of the Campus Isn’t the Classroom”, the writer details the value of creating a big impact within student-life facilities such as, “…hosting academic programs inside a residence hall, inviting physical education classes to use the bowling alley, hosting leadership programs in the student union…”

Further it highlights the importance of food service, providing wider options to the students – all of these influence abilities to improve student life of campus with positive impacts for finance and operations. With the right placement and content strategy, digital signage can easily assist in communicating campus offerings to create awareness, in a delivery format that is more likely to be read, with higher retention of these promotions.

Top 5 Benefits of Digital Signage in Higher Education

  1. Highlight and communicate up-to-date and targeted information
  2. Promote internal school activities and events
  3. Highlight sustainability efforts that are on-going and motivate improved practices by staff and students
  4. Promote food service offerings to highlight specials and foods of interest to keep students on campus
  5. Utilize for other communication needs such as emergency broadcasting, recognizing alumni and donors.
